Partner compatibility
Guna Milan (Ashtakoota) — the classical Vedic analysis of compatibility between two people. Eight dimensions, 36 points, zero fortune-telling: a concrete map of a relationship's strengths and challenges.
ℹ How we calculate this
If you're comparing this result with another program and something differs, the reason is almost always here — not a calculation error.
Which zodiac: Indian (sidereal)
We calculate the way Indian astrology does: based on the actual position of the stars in the sky. Newspaper horoscopes and most Western sites use a different system, shifted by almost a whole sign. That's why your sign might come out different here — it's not a mistake, just a different school.
Rahu and Ketu: traditional version
These are two points in the sky calculated in two different ways. We use the older, classical one. The newer method gives a result shifted by about 1.8° — sometimes enough to land in the neighboring sign. If you see a different result elsewhere, this is almost always why.
House division: a whole sign is one house
The oldest and simplest way of dividing the chart into 12 areas of life. Other programs cut the houses at a different angle — then some planets land in a neighboring area.
Accuracy: verified against eclipses
The Sun's and Moon's positions match real eclipse moments to within a dozen or so seconds. The dates of planets changing signs match those published in India.
Time of birth: accounting for historical daylight saving time
Clocks were changed differently in the past than today — Poland had no daylight saving time from 1950–1976, and Sri Lanka changed its time zone in 1996 and 2006. We account for this so the time of birth is calculated correctly.
What is Guna Milan?
Guna Milan (Ashtakoota) is the classical Vedic method of assessing the compatibility of two people. It compares both partners' Moon nakshatras across eight dimensions (kutas) — including temperament, attraction, the health of the relationship and mental compatibility. The maximum is 36 points; traditionally more than 18 is seen as a relationship with good potential and more than 24 as very compatible.
The calculator shows the points in each kuta with an explanation, checks the doshas — the classical tensions Nadi, Bhakut and Gana — and shows places in the world that favour you both.
It is not a verdict. Compatibility shows a couple's strengths and the areas worth working on consciously.
Frequently asked questions
How many points mean a good match?
Traditionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum, 18–24 good compatibility and above 24 very good. What matters more than the total, though, is which kutas are lacking.
What is Nadi dosha?
The most serious dosha — it appears when both people have the same “nadi” (energy type) and is associated with health and offspring. Classical texts list exceptions that cancel it, e.g. the same nakshatra with different padas or the same Moon sign with different nakshatras — the calculator checks them and shows the result.
Do we need both birth times?
Ideally exact ones, because the Moon's nakshatra can change during a day. Without the time the result may be approximate.
Does a low score mean the relationship will fail?
No. Guna Milan describes natural friction and ease of understanding, not the future. Many lasting couples have an average score and work on their differences consciously.
Where can I find a good wedding date?
In the wedding date calculator, which picks favourable days according to muhurta.
