Which zodiac: Indian (sidereal)
We calculate the way Indian astrology does: based on the actual position of the stars in the sky. Newspaper horoscopes and most Western sites use a different system, shifted by almost a whole sign. That's why your sign might come out different here — it's not a mistake, just a different school.
Rahu and Ketu: traditional version
These are two points in the sky calculated in two different ways. We use the older, classical one. The newer method gives a result shifted by about 1.8° — sometimes enough to land in the neighboring sign. If you see a different result elsewhere, this is almost always why.
House division: a whole sign is one house
The oldest and simplest way of dividing the chart into 12 areas of life. Other programs cut the houses at a different angle — then some planets land in a neighboring area.
Accuracy: verified against eclipses
The Sun's and Moon's positions match real eclipse moments to within a dozen or so seconds. The dates of planets changing signs match those published in India.
Time of birth: accounting for historical daylight saving time
Clocks were changed differently in the past than today — Poland had no daylight saving time from 1950–1976, and Sri Lanka changed its time zone in 1996 and 2006. We account for this so the time of birth is calculated correctly.
What is a Vedic birth chart?
A Vedic birth chart (rasi chakra in Sanskrit, the D1 chart) is a picture of the sky at the moment of your birth, calculated by the rules of Jyotish — traditional Indian astrology. It shows the signs and houses of the nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the nodes Rahu and Ketu, as well as the sign rising on the eastern horizon — the lagna.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars rather than the seasons. That is why your Sun sign here often falls one sign earlier than in a Western horoscope. 9dom.pl uses the Lahiri ayanamsa — the official standard in India — and whole-sign houses, as in the classical texts.
Beyond the chart itself, the calculator works out the navamsha D9 (the chart of maturity and relationships), your Moon nakshatra and the Vimshottari planetary periods, which show which planet leads each stage of life. A birth chart does not predict the future — it shows tendencies, strengths and themes worth working on.
Frequently asked questions
How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?
Vedic astrology measures signs against the stars (sidereal zodiac), Western against the equinox (tropical) — the difference today is about 24°. Jyotish also puts more weight on the Moon, nakshatras and planetary periods, which show when a theme becomes important.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Your birth date is enough for planetary positions and the nakshatra. The time is needed for the lagna and the houses, which change roughly every two hours. If you don't know it, tick “I don't know the time” — we will show everything that can be calculated without it.
What is the lagna?
The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising in the east at the moment of birth. It sets the first house and the order of all the others, which is why Jyotish treats it as the most important point of the chart.
What is the navamsha D9?
A divisional chart in which each sign is split into nine parts. It shows the deeper strength of the planets and themes of maturity, partnership and dharma. A planet strong in both D1 and D9 works more fully.
